Dating Sites Are the New Hotspot for Libyan Protest [Internet]

On a Muslim dating site called Mawada, there's a man with a profile titled "Where Is Miriam?" He will frequently receive messages from other muslim women which read something along the lines of "may your day be filled with Jasmine." He's also quite popular with the ladies, amassing over 171,000 admirers. But neither "Where Is Miriam," nor his admirers are interested in love. They're interested in toppling the Libyan regime led by Muammar Gaddafi. More »

'Glee' Star Matthew Morrison Debuts "Summer Rain" Single

'Glee' Star Matthew Morrison Debuts "Summer Rain" Single

If you're a Glee fan who wishes that Mr. Schue would just unbutton his vest and rock out, then today's your lucky day! Matthew Morrison, 32, premiered "Summer Rain," the first single off his upcoming solo album, on Ryan Seacrest's radio show Monday morning. Listen to it right here!

"Summer Rain" is a radio-friendly pop song, but it's more adult-contemporary than Glee fans might expect -- more Jason Mraz than Justin Bieber. And the lyrics are pretty sexy for a guy who makes his living playing a schoolteacher; in fact, the song is pretty clearly about getting it on in public places. Morrison says that he started out making a more Glee-esque album, but realized quickly that it just wasn't his style.

"In the beginning, I was trying to make it a very poppy, kind of vibrant record that a lot of young people could get into," says the Broadway veteran turned TV star. "But I started writing those kinds of songs and it just didn't resonate with me. I don't want a Glee album. I want something that's very personal to me."

For Morrison, that also involved writing his own original music. "They kind of pressured me, at the beginning, to do a bunch of covers," he told Seacrest. "And I thought to be taken seriously as an artist I had to write my own songs, so that's what I did."

"Summer Rain" hits iTunes on March 8, and the as-yet-untitled album (which is two songs away from completion) will be available on May 10.

Windows 7 Taskbar Items Pinner makes it easy to pin special folders

Pinning programs, folders, and even frequently used documents to your Windows 7 taskbar can be a real time-saver. Certain folders, however, aren't so easy to add -- especially if you want them right on the taskbar and not buried in the Explorer jump list.

Windows 7 Taskbar Items Pinner makes pinning everything from your downloads folder to the control panel to network connections as easy as ticking a checkbox. Just download Pinner from Door2Windows, extract the files, and right-click the executable to run it as Administrator. The app also allows you to unpin existing items, and you can even integrate Pinner into your context menu if you like.

If you want to add Control Panel to your taskbar, we still recommend using the method we showed you -- pinning it with Pinner won't give you a jump list to utilize.

Justin Bieber's Next Album To Capture Justin Timberlake's Magic

Songwriter Sean Garrett says former 'NSYNC star's success inspires Bieber's new project and also dishes on Beyoncé's album.

Justin Bieber may have declined the chance to join Justin Timberlake's label, but according to a songwriter in the know, the former 'NSYNC crooner is the inspiration for the teen sensation's upcoming album.

Songwriter Sean "The Pen "Garrett, who has been working with Bieber on the follow-up to the chart-ruling My World 2.0., spoke with Billboard about the direction for the teen superstar's forthcoming album, saying the project will feature more grown-up fare.

"What we're trying to do with Justin is to segue him into young adulthood," Garrett said of the project, which is also slated to feature production from hitmaker Christopher "Tricky" Stewart. "The one great thing about Justin Bieber is the fact that his fans are going to grow with him. So we want all the fans that started out with him to still be intrigued and excited about him, but we want to also stretch out a little bit and make the fans that are 22-23 years old love Justin as well. When Justin Timberlake went from the last album of *N Sync to his first solo album -- I want to say [we're aiming for] that level. That's the bar for the type of song, that level of 'Cry Me a River,' big records."

Garrett, who has crafted records for stars like Chris Brown and Bieber's mentor Usher, also said he's hard at work on Beyoncé's next project. However, the songwriter didn't divulge too much information, only revealing that he's "been working with her extremely hard ... she's my favorite."

While Garrett said the plan for his next outing is to angle Bieber toward a swiftly maturing audience, Bieber himself has refused to categorize his music, insisting to MTV News in December that he's just focused on creating quality records.

"Whatever comes out of my mouth is just what you guys are going to hear," Bieber explained of his hits. "I don't know, it's not a specific type of music. Whatever music I write, I wouldn't say I'm pop or R&B or country or anything: I would just say it's just good music,"

What do you think Justin Bieber's new music is going to sound like? Let us know in the comments!

Inhabitat's Week in Green: SunPower supplants Ford, lava power, and the airlifted eco shelter

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week's most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us -- it's the Week in Green.

This week Inhabitat saw geothermal power projects pick up steam around the world as Iceland eyed liquid magma as an energy source and the UK sought to tap geothermal reserves under Newcastle. We also saw scientists develop a stretchable solar-powered sensor that can detect the drop of a pin, and we were impressed by a brilliant system that uses algae to treat wastewater and generate fuel in one fell swoop.

We also showcased several innovative examples of high-tech architecture - Wales' futuristic newport transit station and a massive green-roofed innovation hub that is set to become Botswana's first LEED-certified building. Solar-powered structures were a hot topic as well as we took a look inside SunPower's incredible renovated headquarters, learned about the new location of the 2011 Solar Decathlon, and showcased a photovoltaic-powered alpine eco shelter.

Finally, this week we got set for the start of spring by sharing our five favorite green gadget gardening tools and a rainwater recycling system that comes complete with a solar pump. We also spotted a chic cradle-to-cradle raincoat that will fend off impending showers and a natty wool iPad cover that will keep your tablet cozy in blustery weather.

Transphorm promises brickless laptop chargers, power savings aplenty

Stop us if you've heard this one before. A mysterious startup company operates in secret for a number of years, raises millions in funding from some of the biggest players in the industry (in this case, Google and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers), and announces a breakthrough technology that promises to change everything. In this case the startup is a company called Transphorm, and the breakthrough is a gallium nitride technology that promises to improve AC/DC transformers. While that might not sound like the most exciting thing in the world, the company's CEO says that it could not only drastically reduce the electricity wasted by electronics that currently rely on silicon components, but significantly reduce the size of the components as well. One prime example there is laptop charger bricks, which Transphorm says could be reduced or even completely eliminated by building the necessary components right into the laptop itself. The company also sees a huge opportunity with electric cars, and especially data centers, which is one of the first markets it will be targeting. Of course, complete details are still fairly light at the moment, but the company is promising to unveil its first products in just two weeks, and you can be sure we'll be watching.

Oscars Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know!

Join us at 6 p.m. tonight live from the Academy Awards red carpet on MTVNews.com.
By Eric Ditzian

Photo: Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

All across La La Land in the hectic hours before the 83rd Academy Awards, nominees are putting the finishing touches on the scraps of paper containing their -- fingers crossed! -- acceptance speeches. Limo drivers are gassing up their rides. And somewhere inside the bowels of the Kodak Theatre, co-host James Franco (or, more likely, James Franco's assistant) is shining his shoes.

Meanwhile, you're putting the finishing touches on your Oscar ballot or making sure your Oscar party doesn't run out of Jesse Eisenburgers and King's Peach Pie. Stressful!

Soon, though, the action on Hollywood's biggest night will be under way. What can you expect when the show goes live? MTV News has got you covered. Read on for everything you need to know about this year's Academy Awards:

The Live Coverage
The first thing you need to know is that MTV News will be everywhere on Oscar night. To begin the evening, we'll be launching a red-carpet live stream at MTVNews.com from 6 to 8 p.m. ET tonight, where we'll be chatting up everyone from Natalie Portman to Christian Bale. We'll also be taking your questions via Twitter, so tweet your questions to @MTVNews using the hashtag #oscars for a chance to see your favorite celebrities fielding your own inquiries.

We'll also be running a red-carpet fashion blog on Hollywood Crush. Once the show begins, shift over to Movies Blog for a live blog about the show itself. And, of course, we'll be churning out loads of video, analyses and breakout stories across all our Web properties, so keep it locked to MTV News for the very latest updates about the show.

The Races
All week long, we've been previewing the major Oscar categories. Best Supporting Actress might be the tightest of all the top races, with Melissa Leo ("The Fighter") grappling with Hailee Steinfeld ("True Grit") and Helena Bonham Carter ("The King's Speech"). Best Supporting Actor couldn't present more of a contrast: Christian Bale ("The Fighter") long ago locked up this win. Colin Firth ("The King's Speech"), too, is a sure bet to win Best Actor, while Natalie Portman ("Black Swan") should coast to Best Actress victory (though Annette Bening ["The Kids Are All Right"] could play the spoiler). When it comes to Best Director, Tom Hooper ("The King's Speech") is a slight favorite over David Fincher ("The Social Network"), but either of these gentlemen could walk away the victor. The same likely cannot be said about Best Picture: "King's Speech" appears to have pulled away from "Social Network" and should end up the night's big winner.

The Rundown
Deadline Hollywood has published the broad outline of the telecast, giving us a general idea of how things are going to go down. Franco and co-host Anne Hathaway will begin the evening with a pre-taped video in which they appear in scenes from the Best Picture nominees.

Tom Hanks will be the first presenter, announcing both Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography. Other presenters include Russell Brand, Sandra Bullock, Robert Downey Jr., Hugh Jackman, Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon and Oprah Winfrey. Hilary Swank and Kathryn Bigelow will present Best Director and then, just before the clock strikes 11:30 p.m. on the East Coast, Steven Spielberg will hand out Best Picture.

So you think you have a good picture about what the Oscars are going to look like? Hopefully, but check out this TwitPic from Franco for what he simply calls "my view."

Will it be a regal evening for "The King's Speech"? Can "The Social Network" dial up Oscar gold? Don't miss MTV News' "2011 Oscars Live" at 6 p.m. tonight when we'll be chatting with your favorite Hollywood stars live from the red carpet on MTVNews.com, and stick with us all Oscar night for winners, interviews, photos and more!

Firefox 4 for Mobile beta 5 released, try it on your Windows or Mac PC!

Not only is Firefox 4 for Mobile beta 5 ready to test on your Android or Maemo phone, but you can also download and run the browser on your Windows, Mac or Linux PC.

The new beta brings a slew of fixes and spit-shines, and for the first time it almost feels finished -- just in time, considering the final release is due in the next week or two. There are now over 100 mobile add-ons -- but, of course, in true Firefox beta fashion, fery few of them have been updated to work with the new beta. For a complete list of the changes and known issues, check the release notes.

Finally, you must check out the PC version of Firefox 4 for Mobile! It's an almost-perfect copy of the real deal: you can try out add-ons, and click-and-drag to simulate a touch interface. It's a lot easier to explore the (rather sexy) new UI with a proper desktop processor, and a keyboard and mouse, too.

There's QR code for the Android build after the break.

Sprint HTC Arrive with Windows Phone 7 copy and paste first hands-on! (video)

HTC also brought along a Sprint-branded Arrive to our San Francisco reader meetup, and while we're already familiar with this Windows Phone 7 slider from our time with the HTC 7 Pro it's still nice to see a CDMA WP7 device in the flesh. Oh, and the keyboard is pretty fantastic -- not only does it feel great, but the dedicated number row alone is reason for keyboard fans to give this thing a look. The best part? The demo unit was loaded up with the Windows Phone 7 copy and paste update, which is the first time we've seen it in the wild. The system worked well, but we noticed that you once you paste out of the clipboard your text is gone, so you can't multiple paste. It's a little odd -- we'll have a video up shortly.

Update: The video is up -- check it below!

Update 2: Okay, so you can multiple paste! The paste icon just disappears after the first paste, which is super confusing. You can just swipe to the right to bring it back, though. We'd suggest Microsoft re-think this implementation a little for an update, since it wasn't clear to anyone here at first glance.

Apple tests anti-jailbreak code in iBooks, new PwnageTool circumvents it

Apple, it seems, may be trying out some anti-jailbreak code in its iBooks e-book reader app. The app intentionally tries to run an some unsigned executable code every time you try to open a book -- and if it runs, iBooks knows the device is jailbroken and refuses to open your e-books.

Fortunately (or unfortunately for Apple), the iPhone Dev-Team has released a new version of the PwnageTool jailbreak that incorporates the Chronic Dev Team's 'feedface' iOS 4.2.1 untether and circumvents Apple's crippling code.

Apple's intentional hijacking of iBooks is an interesting move, but given its less-than-amiable stance on jailbreaking it's surprising that it's taken this long to actually implement anti-jailbreak mechanisms -- especially after removing the infamous jailbreak API back in December. It now becomes a question of when Apple will insert similar measures into other iOS apps -- and whether they will be a whole lot more destructive than merely blocking e-books. The Age of Bricking may be upon us!
